What Are You Trying To Say?

Artist Statement for Studio Melt’s First Annual Contemporary Jewelry Exhibition “What Are You Trying To Say?”

Studio Melt in Australia is putting on its first annual contemporary jewellery exhibition “What Are You Trying To Say”. When I got wind of the theme I thought I would throw my hat in the ring and was delighted when I heard I had been chosen as an exhibitor. My work, along with a hoard of other great makers, will be showcased this summer, first in Newcastle and then in Sydney.

You can find out more exhibition info and a full list of exhibitors here

Statement:

Leah Butler, the mind and hands behind Nvll+Void, frequently weaves subtle themes into her work, inviting viewers to explore beyond the surface and engage in meaningful discussion.

The REBAR COLLECTION, featured here, explores themes of impermanence, drawing inspiration from architectural construction, destruction and deterioration. The silver bar in the design mimics rebar, which is normally unseen in completed structures but is integral to their structural stability, evoking its strength even through adversity, when exposed. Through this lens, Leah captures the beauty of dichotomy.

The M E T R O P O L I S collection, also on display here, examines the interplay between conflict and modernisation. Inspired by the 1927 film of the same name, this collection uses a ubiquitous tiny man-made object (the hex nut) to highlight the impact of the rapid growth of economies on our daily lives.

Nvll+Void attests to Leah’s dedication to thought-provoking design, craftsmanship and sustainability.
