Getting the right ring size

Determining the right ring size can be a tricky journey that involves various factors. While jewelry stores usually offer ring sizing services, the process isn't as straightforward as it seems. So here are some tips, tricks and bits of information to help you get it right.

Navigating Global Sizing

From letter sizes in the UK to numerical sizes in the USA and millimeter measurements in Europe, the differences are notable. Moreover, ring mandrels with multiple readings might even differ by a quarter size based on their country of origin. I choose to use the EU method of measurement, which is the circumference of your finger in millimetres. E.g if it measures 5.4cm (54mm) you should choose size 54. A tip: You can download one of the various ring-sizing apps on your smartphone and follow the guidelines. This is never going to be as accurate as a jeweller’s measurement but it can give a good idea.

The Intricacies of Body Temperature

Believe it or not, your own body plays a role in finding the right ring size. Your finger size can vary due to factors like temperature, blood circulation, and fluid retention. So a ring worn comfortably in the winter can become too tight on a summers day, or after exercise. It’s natural for your finger size to vary slightly from morning until night, or season to season.

Where is the ring measured

Unfortunately, the ring sizing process isn't consistent across the industry. When a ring is placed on a sizing stick, it can either be read in the middle of the ring band, which we call a 'Center Reading’, or it might align with the edge of a size, referred to as the 'Leading Edge.' Though the difference is small, it can affect how the ring fits on your finger. I choose to use the ‘leading edge’ reading for ring sizes. Keep this in mind when ordering from my webshop or when asking a jeweller for sizing.

Wide Rings and Comfort

Unlike slim rings, wide bands cover more surface area and so might feel tighter. When getting your finger sized, be concious of whether a thin or thick ring gauge sizer is in use. This awareness ensures you choose the right size, considering the width of the desired ring. A lot of my Nvll and Void designs feature a wide band, as I tend toward the chunky designs. If sizing a wide ring you already have, insist on obtaining the leading edge reading.

Assistance with Sizing and Beyond

Most jewelry stores offer free sizing services. A visit to your local shop, along with a request for your ring size, can provide you with the information you need.

Should your ordered ring not fit perfectly, reach out to me, and I will exchange or adjust the size for your comfort. Keep in mind that ring adjustments are quite common, especially as lifestyles change and bodies evolve over time.
